8 mistakes you should avoid on your website

8 mistakes you should avoid on your website

10-03-2017

A professional website, nowadays, it is not merely a "luxury", it’s a necessity.
A proper web presence of your store or business, could expand your clientele and raise your sales greatly.

The mere existence of a website does not guarantee such a thing though. There are a large number of factors that can make your website to succeed and some will certainly condemn it to failure.

We will present you some of the most common mistakes we encounter and how to avoid them.

1. We forget that we own a website...

We built the website, so our job is over. This is the most common mistake that we encounter.

We must renew the content of our website as often as possible and make use of any social networks we use (and more). A page that uses social media, increases the chances of new customer acquisition and therefore increases the possibility of increasing its profits. Additionally, Google “favors” the websites that have a better interaction with social networks and updated content, and this in turn may lead to increase your profits.

2. Our website is not mobile-friendly (Responsive Web Design)

Our site is old and not designed with mobile phone users in mind.

You should not wonder if we told you that the markets and the use of the internet via mobile devices (mobile phones, tablets, etc.) has risen sharply in recent years, to the point to even exceed and use through desktop devices! This means that this number is going to increase further in the near future, and that we should not ignore such a large percentage of potential customers.

For this reason, we need our website to be able to adapt to any device. The way to do this is through responsive web design.

3. I cannot find what Im looking for (lack of information).

Potential customers are always looking for solutions or services that we can offer them. If our website is not sufficiently informed, you will not be able to help your visitors.

We need to provide useful and comprehensive information to the visitor so that he can find answers to the questions that led to our site from the start.

Equally important is the way we convey this information to our visitors.
Because of our expertise on a particular sector, we forget sometimes that our visitor is looking for a simple and understandable answer to the question that concerns him. The use of specialized terms or demonstration of our knowledge is not going to help the visitor unless it’s one of our colleagues. Use simple and understandable terms to make your guests, who do not have the relevant expertise on your subject, understand you.

4. Hiding information

Unfortunately, even today, there are still websites that will make you strive to be able to find just a simple contact number.

Do not hide important information from your visitors, such as:

  1. Contact details (address, phone, email)
  2. Links to social media (Facebook, Twitter, etc.)
  3. Office hours
  4. Prices (if possible)
  5. Information about your business

5. Our website loads slowly

Almost 50% of visitors are expecting our website to load quickly. In fact, in less than 2 seconds. Also, an 80% of visitors are much more likely not to return again if the website was slow to load.

A properly developed website in conjunction with the proper web hosting can make your website load almost instantaneously!

6. Εxaggerations ...

Excessive useless or simply useless content:

  1. A large number of animations,
  2. A large number of banners and pop-ups,
  3. Advertisements
  4. Music and video are automatically started with our entry on the site,
  5. Use of many different fonts and colors,

are just some of the items that will bore your visitors and make them leave your site almost immediately.

7. Complexity

Complex and labyrinthine menus that make your visitors confused. Poor interconnection of our pages can bring a visitor into despair and make him want to leave our website.

Keep things simple.

If you have a large amount of information and many categories, try to simplify the menu and the navigation to your website. Give your visitor the the opportunity to find what he is looking easily, without using multiple submenus and categories.

8. I will fix it myself ... or I will find the cheapest price on the internet

Web design and development at the price of 80€...

Sounds nice, right? Actually, this is a cheap trik, at best.

Building a professional website requires specific plan and goals. And every detail counts. From web design to web develpment and search engine optimization, expertise is required and deep knowledge of the subject to create a website that will have a real effect.

But above all we need commitment. Someone who will devote the time needed to ensure that everything will be done correctly.

Using a free web design platform or trusting someone who promises us everything at no cost, you will only succeed to have a website that does not stand out, do not inspire the visitor, does not cover your needs and its ultimately doomed to fail.

How to choose the right business partner

You must therefore consult a specialist. Who though?

A Google search can help. A possible search would be the following:
"Web Development" and the name of your town.

Check the first 10-20 results and give importance to the things in the list below:

  1. Check their own website. How neat is it? It fulfills all the above mentioned? Does it earn your confidence? How much time you think that they dedicated to create it?
  2. Portfolio. Take a look at case studies to get an idea of the quality of their work. If there are no work samples, proceed to the next in the list, directly...
  3. Content. It is up to date? Is there a blog? Are they up-to-date with the latest news in their field?
  4. Contact by phone or by requesting a meeting and get a personal impression of your prospective business partner.
  5. Explain exactly what your goals are, what you want to create and ask for a detailed offer.
